Nina Paonessa, D.O., FACOS

Dr. Nina Paonessa is a board certified general surgeon and proctologist and a fellowship trained colon and rectal surgeon.   She is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and has over ten years of experience in her specialty.



ninapicsmallThe only female colorectal surgeon in Ocean and Monmouth counties, Dr. Paonessa is known for her expertise and patient-centered care. She prides herself in treating each of her patients as a family member and preserving each patient’s well-being and dignity.

Dr. Paonessa completed her undergraduate degree, B.S. in biology, at Siena College in Loudonville, New York where she graduated magna cum laude. She attended medical school in Erie, Pennsylvania at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Paonessa completed her internship and general surgery residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where she also served as chief resident and was named “Resident of the Year”. Her colon and rectal surgery fellowship was completed at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Dr. Paonessa has been named Proctologist of the Year by the American College of Osteopathic Proctologists, awarded the Patient’s Choice Award and the Compassionate Doctor’s Award by Vitals.com for six consecutive years, and is on the HealthGrades Honor Roll.

Dr. Paonessa specializes in the evaluation and treatment of patients with colon and rectal conditions/diseases. She is trained in all aspects of colon and rectal surgery, including minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Paonessa offers conservative, minimally invasive treatment options that are performed right in the office, for many common anorectal disorders. Her motto is: “Just because I am a surgeon, doesn’t mean everyone needs a surgery. There are other options I can offer you”.

Although it is contingent upon the individual disease state and procedure performed, Dr. Paonessa’s goal is for each of her patients to return to his/her level of functioning prior to having surgery. She is not only a resource for, but a constant presence and support for all of her patients in the perioperative period. Dr. Paonessa prides herself in staying abreast of all of the latest techniques and treatments in the field of colon and rectal surgery and tailors each treatment plan to the specific needs of each patient. One size does not fit all.

STH-1Dr. Paonessa is the co-editor of the second edition of the textbook, The Surgical Treatment of Hemorrhoids (2009). Within this textbook, she has also authored three chapters: “Treatment of Hemorrhoids Complicated by Co-Morbidity”, “Management of Hemorrhoid Complications: Thrombosis,   Fissure-in-Ano”, and “Conservative/Nonoperative Therapy”. Dr. Paonessa has presented at the Annual National Conference of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and at the Annual Clinical Assembly of Osteopathic Surgeons. She has also published in the medical journal, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum.
